Enquiry

The initial enquiry from the property convenor was regarding some woodworm infestation to a hand built timber storage units with-in one of the halls used by the Sunday school & nursery groups.

Survey

My inspection of the property revealed that an intense woodworm infestation and attacks by wet rot fungus had caused significant structural damage to floorboards and joists throughout the hall. Timbers along the rear section of the hall were at the point of collapse. The hand built storage unit was also very heavily infested and could not be treated or repaired.

Cause

It is likely that the woodworm was present in the untreated floor timbers when the hall was built. The infestation has continued to develop undetected for many years. The damp conditions in the under building are well suited to woodworm infestation. This dampness has generally been caused by atmospheric conditions in the hall, however lack of sub floor ventilation along with the dampness have created the conditions suitable for the germination and growth of the wet rot fungus.

Treatment

The entire area of floor timbers were removed from the hall and adjacent toilets. New sub floor vents were fitted around the entire perimeter of the building.
All retained timbers outwith the area being renewed were treated with a surface application of an insecticidal fluid as a slight infestation was noted during an additional inspection instructed by the client.
Using treated timbers, new sections of joists and red pine T&G floorboards were fitted throughout.

End Result

The clients have been left with a structurally sound floor free from woodworm and rot and the peace of mind that all works are covered by our 20 year guarantee.
